Improving Your Health and Wellness

Why is your muscular health important? We only get one body and it has to last us a lifetime. Most of us own a car, which we have to regularly service and repair to keep it running smoothly. Similarly, we should take care of our bodies to keep our muscles and ligaments, joints and tissues operating and moving freely.
A monthly massage may help by increasing blood and lymph circulation, enhancing delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the cells, increasing movement and mobility of the muscles. By removing knots and releasing tight muscles this results in decreasing pain and inflammation, as well as restoring full range of motion so that you can move and perform at your best.
Massage may also help to release stress and anxiety by relaxing the central nervous system. Relaxing massage benefits may include improved digestion, a feeling of calmness, and an improved positive mood.
Whether you’re sitting at a desk for long hours or pushing your body to the limit in a triathlon, our services can help you achieve your goals and perform at your best.
Remedial Massage
Qualified Remedial massage therapist’s hold a diploma level certification and can give Private Health rebates. To be certified to give rebates, your therapist must also be a member of a professional association, hold insurance and maintain 40 points of continuing education credits per year.
Remedial massage is perfect for athletes and work weary individuals. A sports massage treatment may be tailored to athletes engaged in different sporting pursuits and the relevant muscles used. The aim is to aid recovery and engage in prevention of sporting injuries. It is not necessarily a relaxing form of massage, it is therapeutic in effect.
‘Remedial’ massage implies that the therapist endeavors to provide a ‘remedy’ to resolve muscle tension, knots, trigger points, release tension on a ligament, identify strains, joint and movement irregularities and more.
Before the massage begins, your therapist will talk to you about your health and lifestyle. They will ask you to lie on a massage table and will cover you with towels to protect your privacy and to keep you warm. Natural massage balms, creams or oils are used to help massage your skin and muscles smoothly.
Remedial massage does not have one specific technique, rather a range of techniques depending on the training of the therapist and the nature of the injury or condition.
A Wise Investment for Your Health
So if you’re ever questioning if massage is worth the money, remember, we can always replace that car or vehicle we drive, but there is no replacement for the precious vehicle we travel this life in, our body.
Advanced Dry Needling
Dry Needling is used to target and release trigger points and taunt bands of muscle fibers that are active in musculoskeletal pain syndromes. The term ‘dry needling’ does not include injection of medication as found in ‘wet needling’ and is targeting intramuscular nerve stimulation, in order for the nerve which innervates the muscle to let go or release the tension. By interrupting the feedback loop between the nerve and the muscle, furthermore by stimulating chemical and vascular responses, this activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms and releases the muscle.
It is a very effective therapy when used safely by an experienced and well trained practitioner.
The preferred method utilised at ExcelR8 is to leave the needle in situ for up to 10 – 15 mins in order for a chemical response to occur and vascular stimulation (increased blood flow). Initially the body will release histamine, and then certain chemicals and hormones are released by the brain, including endorphins and enkephalin which further encourages the muscle to release and create increased feelings of wellbeing.
Where a local twitch response is elicited in the muscle, patient’s report an immediate and significant decrease in pain and local tenderness. Dry needling when used skillfully, can restore a range of movement and muscle activation patterns and reduce local, referred and widespread pain.
The treatments focus on muscles and specifically on musculo-skeletal release, not in contrast with acupuncture which focusses on treatment of meridians and energy channels.
Therefore whilst there may be some overlap between dry needling techniques and trigger points targeted, acupuncture is a different modality to dry needling.
Advanced Cupping Techniques
Cupping has been around since ancient times and has some very beneficial effects on the body. It is important to note that not all cupping techniques leave marks, especially when used superficially for creating suction and applied dynamically (sliding or moving) for myofascial release.
Traditionally cupping has been used for moving stagnant blood, as it draws out mainly dead or contaminated blood cells. In a person who is heavily medicated the color of the cupping marks may be dark purple as opposed to red, thus indicating dirty blood and having a cleansing effect.
Where a ligament is inflamed cupping may be used to suck out blood and create a cupping mark to increase the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Ligaments themselves don’t have blood flow, therefore it can be beneficial and may reduce inflammation/pain by cupping the area. This increases and stimulates more blood-flow around that ligament, as the body is activated into clean up and carry away the blood cells from the cupping mark. Thus increasing blood-flow around the ligament, speeds up the healing process.
Another distinction is that it is technically not a bruise made from blunt force trauma to the muscle for example. Whilst it might look colorful it generally does not have the same level of associated pain as bruising.
Application of dynamic cupping can be excellent for treating shin splints and tight ITB as well as myofascial release in areas where there are adhesions between the muscle and fascia. Cupping may help restore full range of motion and a feeling of lightness after tight fascia is released that has been restricting movement.
